How to do the Perfect Shoulder Press

Our shoulders are the most mobile joints in our bodies, but this greater freedom of movement also results in a less stable joint - one that is extremely susceptible to injury. Many people experience pain in one or both shoulders as a result, both from the activities of daily living as well as sports activities. It is imperative, therefore, that the muscles that surround and support the shoulder are strong and balanced to prevent dysfunction and the associated pain. And strong shoulders also look great come summertime, too!

Here is how to properly perform one of the most common shoulders exercises, the shoulder press:

The key points to doing the perfect shoulder press that are talked about in this video are:

  1. Control the movement, don't use momentum
  2. Stop when your elbows are about in-line with your shoulders
  3. Choose a weight that is challenging, but that you can still control

If you follow these tips, you will be able to do a shoulder press in a way that will both maximize the results you get from the shoulder press and also decrease your chance of injury while doing the exercise.
