Push-ups for Beginners

I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: If you asked me to choose one exercise that was my absolute all-time favorite, it would be the push-up. I started doing them at the age of fourteen and have been doing them religiously ever since.

If you’re a person who thinks there is no way you could do a single push-up though – you can! It may just take a little time to build your upper body strength using some push-up variations.

This video will show you how to build your way up to a standard push-up by going through transition steps, starting with a very easy variation of a push-up, that will help you build your arm strength and eventually get you to a standard push-up:

Push-ups are so effective, working three main muscle groups (chest, shoulders and triceps) all at the same time. They are functional, you can do them just about anywhere, and they can be modified for the beginner exerciser all the way up to the most advanced bodybuilder.

There is one caveat, however: You have to perform a proper push-up for it to truly work its magic. Far too many people perform this exercise incorrectly, which leads to diminished results.

A few quick tips:

  1. Focus on the quality, not the quantity of your push-ups.
  2. Slow the movement down, especially the lowering phase.
  3. Push your body back up until your arms are fully extended.

Use these tips and the video above to start building up your push-up strength and form. Before you know it, push-ups will be a staple of your workout routine!
