Earth Day Workout: Find Your Inner Animal

Three kids pretending to be animals.

In honor of Earth Day, I’ve created a workout inspired by animal exercises you can do with your kids. If you want to challenge yourself you can also add weight using a weight plate from your home gym, dumbbells or a sandbag.

Find Your Inner Animal Workout

Exercise Sets Reps
Frog Jumps 3 10
Bear Crawls 1 10 moving forward, 10 moving back, 10 to the right, 10 to the left
Alternating Spider Crunch 3 30 seconds
Crab Walk 3 10 moving forward, 10 moving back, 10 to the right, 10 to the left
Inch Worm 4 8-10

Frog Jumps

Start in a squat position with your hands on the ground. Then explosively jump forward as high and as far as you can landing in a squat with your hands on the ground.

Bear Crawls

Start on your hands and knees. Lift your knees an inch off the ground then crawl like a bear. Move forward ten paces, then back ten paces then ten paces to each side.

Added challenge: Add weight to your back

Alternating Spider Crunch

Start in a plank position with your forearms on the ground shoulder-width apart and your core tight. Lift your right knee up and move it towards your right elbow so the knee touches the elbow, crunching as you do. Return to start position and repeat on opposite side. Alternate until the prescribed reps have been completed.

Added challenge: Add weight to your back

Crab Walk

Sit on the ground with your hands behind your back and legs bent at the knees. Lift your butt then crawl like a crab. Just like the bear crawls you will move forward, backwards and laterally.

Added challenge: Add weight on your stomach

Inchworm

Start in a standing position. Bend over putting your hands on the ground. Walk your hands out until you are in a plank position. Then walk your feet up to your hands and slowly roll up to standing.

Remember to use weights only as heavy as you can maintain proper form. This is a fun way to get your kids moving (indoors or outside) without it feeling like exercise. For added fun, ask your kids to make animal noises as they do the exercises. Have fun, fit family!
