As a new season rolls around, many of us are ready to make changes to our routines and rhythms — and that should extend to our fitness routines, too.

Whether it's the fresh energy of spring, long summer days, fall's coziness, or the slower pace of winter, each season provides an opportunity to pause, reassess, and realign your habits. Read on for our top tips for refreshing your fitness routine.

Why Your Fitness Routine Needs a Refresh

Reason 1: Your Goals Don't Fit the Season

Many of us set fitness-related resolutions in the new year, but those goals may no longer be right for you later in the year. Take some time to reassess and make adjustments that better reflect what is important to you right now in this season.

If the weather has you turning indoors for your workouts, mixing up your treadmill sessions may be more important than reaching your outdoor step count or chasing a race PR. Or, maybe you want to dust off your dumbbells and return to strength training after a break.

Not sure where to start with goal setting? Begin by defining your focus (e.g. getting stronger, boosting longevity). From there, set 1-3 goals centered around your focus — and make sure they're SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).

Reason 2: You're Feeling Bored or Burnt Out

Sticking to the same routine for too long can lead to exercise boredom — or even burnout if you're overtraining. Shaking up your routine with the start of a new season could be just what you need to get re-energized and motivated to tackle your fitness goals.

  • If you're burnt out on running, try lower impact incline walking on the treadmill.
  • If you always stick with the same strength training routine, try a trainer-led class on a fitness app like JRNY to learn new moves that can challenge you.
  • If your gym routine feels stale, it might be time to upgrade your home gym with new adjustable dumbbells, or versatile cardio equipment like an indoor cycling bike or Max Trainer.

How to Refresh Your Routine

Step 1: Reflect on What's Working (and What's Not)

Refreshing your fitness routine doesn't have to mean a full overhaul. If certain aspects of your routine are working, keep it up! Instead, reflect on what's not. Ask yourself:

  • Are the workouts I'm doing energizing me or do they feel like a chore?
  • Am I exercising at a time of day when I'm at my best, or are there too many distractions?
  • Is what I'm doing helping me reach my goals?

Your reflection might reveal that you should try a new type of workout or switch from an evening routine to a morning routine. Small tweaks can make a big difference in your motivation, as well as your results.

Step 2: Set Seasonal Goals

As mentioned earlier, goal setting is a powerful way to bring clear direction to your fitness routine. If annual goals feel too daunting or long-term, try setting seasonal goals instead that you can realistically achieve in the next 8-12 weeks.

  • Spring: work up to three runs a week (combination of treadmill and outdoor runs) in preparation for a summer race.
  • Summer: supplement outdoor walking with two 20-minute cross training sessions on an indoor cycling bike to improve your endurance.
  • Fall: incorporate 1 HIIT-style workout per week on the Max Trainer to boost your aerobic base while keeping it low impact.
  • Winter: focus on strength training with weights or kettlebells when the temps are too cold for outdoor exercise.

Remember, your routine should work with you, not against you. If your summer evenings are packed, consider early morning workouts. If dark winter mornings aren't motivating, consider a lunchtime or after-work session.

Step 3: Don't Forget to Have Fun

One of the best ways to stay motivated is to keep your workouts enjoyable, engaging and challenging. This could include:

  • A new fitness class. Fitness apps like JRNY offer a variety of classes to keep your workouts feeling fresh.
  • A different format. If your go-to is steady state cardio, try out a HIIT workout or an interval session on the treadmill. Playing with speed sessions can be incredibly beneficial for your health and spice up a stale routine.
  • A different environment. Sometimes all you need is a change of scenery. For your next strength session, take your weights to a different room of your house.
