Affected products

This recall is for the BowFlex 552, 52.5 lb. Adjustable Dumbbells and 1090, 90 lb. Adjustable Dumbbells. These dumbbells were sold in pairs and single units in black and include handles, weight plates, and a base. If you need help identifying whether you have the 552s or 1090s, as opposed to other BowFlex dumbbell sets which are not included in this recall, please contact us for further assistance.

All genuine BowFlex 552/1090 products in the U.S. are included in this recall and eligible for a remedy, regardless of whether or not the product’s serial number is listed here.

Reason for Recall

The weight plates can dislodge from the handle during use, posing an impact hazard. This recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Additional details can be found in this press release.

What do I do if I own BowFlex 552 or 1090 Dumbbells?

You should immediately stop using them and complete the recall claim form on our website, which is the first step in attaining your remedy.

What is the remedy?

Customers who bought BowFlex 552 or 1090 dumbbells from April 23, 2024 through May 2025 (after Johnson Health Tech Retail, Inc. acquired select BowFlex assets from Nautilus) will be eligible to receive a replacement dumbbell (or set of dumbbells, if applicable) or a voucher equal to the full amount of the purchase price and a one-year complimentary subscription to our JRNY Fitness App. Learn more about the replacement dumbbell option — the BowFlex Results Series 552 and BowFlex Results Series 1090.

Customers who bought the recalled model dumbbells from Nautilus, Inc. before April 23, 2024 will be eligible to receive a prorated refund voucher to be put toward the purchase of products available on BowFlex.com and a one-year complimentary subscription to our JRNY Fitness App.

To be eligible to participate in the recall, customers will submit a claim through our website and return the handle and base of each dumbbell subject to the recall.

Submitting a claim

How do I submit a claim?

Customers can visit our online recall portal, www.bowflex.com/recalls, and click on "Claim Form" at the top the page. From there, you can complete the recall claim form.

What information or materials do I need to submit with my claim?

Please provide the following information when you submit your claim form:

  • Full name
  • Address
  • Email
  • Phone number
  • Serial number of each dumbbell (located on the base)
  • Image proof of serial number (.jpg, .png or .gif. Size limit: 2.5MB)
  • Place of Purchase
  • Date of Purchase
  • Picture of proof of purchase, if the dumbbells were purchased from a retailer on or after April 23, 2024 (.jpg, .png or .gif. Size limit: 2.5MB)

Each form submission can accommodate up to two dumbbell units (1 set). If you own multiple sets (more than two dumbbells), submit a separate form for each set. Consumer registrations are limited to submission of 10 dumbbell units (or 5 submission forms) total. If you are in possession of more than 10 dumbbell units, please contact our Customer Support team at 800-209-3539 or via email at recall@bowflex.com to discuss the remedies available to distributors, resellers, and other parties or to provide a valid proof of purchase for your dumbbell units.

Why are you asking for this information?

We collect your contact information so we can reach you with any questions or updates about your claim. The mailing address you provide will be used to send you a pre-paid shipping label and return box for the handle(s) and base(s) of your existing dumbbell(s). Once your claim is verified, we'll issue your remedy to the email address provided.

I submitted my claim. What happens next?

Once your claim has been submitted and verified, we will ship you a pre-paid shipping label and box to return the handle(s) and base(s) of your existing dumbbell(s). Boxes are expected to begin shipping no earlier than the first week in July. Once we have received your dumbbell(s), your remedy will be initiated.

What do I need to send you? What if I accidentally include something else?

You'll need to return the handles and bases of each dumbbell included in your claim.

Important: before sealing your return box, please double-check that only the required items are inside. Unfortunately, we're unable to return any additional items that are included by mistake.

Returning the dumbbell handles and base

How do I remove the handles from the Dumbbells?

Follow the steps below:

  1.  Place the dumbbells in the base
  2.  Turn the dial to the lowest setting (5 lbs for 552's, 10 lbs for 1090's)
  3.  Lift the handle straight up out of the base, that way any unattached weight plates remain in the base
  4.  Once the handle has been safely removed and the remaining weight plates set aside, unclip and remove the base from the dumbbell stand, if applicable.

What do I do with the remaining weight plates after I send in the handles and base?

You can dispose of the weight plates according to your local waste management procedures.

What happens if you determine my product isn't eligible? Will I get it back?

Unfortunately, we're unable to return any items sent to us, even if they're found to be ineligible. Please review the eligibility criteria and instructions carefully before proceeding.

Why might you reject my claim?

The recall and remedy only apply to genuine BowFlex 552 and 1090 dumbbells. We will review the product information you submit, as well as the handle(s) and base(s) you return. Your claim may be rejected if:

  • The product is determined to be counterfeit
  • You don't return the correct number of products listed in your claim

I have the dumbbell stand with the media rack, too. Is that included in the recall?

No, the dumbbell stand with the media rack is not included in the recall.

I purchased my unit(s) on or after April 23, 2024 and cannot find a suitable product on bowflex.com to use my voucher. What can I do?

Johnson Health Tech Trading customers who purchased their unit on or after April 23, 2024 and cannot find a suitable product on BowFlex.com with their refund voucher can request that their voucher be converted to a cash refund, which will be issued in the form of a VISA gift card. Voucher Terms and Conditions

The Voucher is being provided to you in connection with your return of authentic BowFlex dumbbells. The Voucher may only be used in connection with purchases you make on the BowFlex ecommerce website at www.bowflex.com. To use the Voucher, enter the voucher code provided to you at checkout when making a purchase on BowFlex.com. The Voucher can be used only online and will not be accepted in stores. If you do not use the entire amount associated with the Voucher in a single purchase, you will be able to apply any additional remaining amount to future purchases. If the total purchase amount of your order (including any applicable sales tax, shipping fees, and extended warranties) is more than the value associated with the Voucher, you must select another payment method to pay for the remaining amount. You cannot use more than one Voucher per order. You cannot use your Voucher to purchase any gift cards or other digital goods. If you return a purchase for which you used a Voucher, any applicable refund amount to which you are entitled will be credited to your Voucher in the amount equivalent to the amount that was initially used on the Voucher.

The Voucher does not expire or decrease in value if you do not use it, and is not subject to inactivity fees, maintenance fees or any other fees. Your Voucher is not replaceable or refundable if lost or stolen. We are not responsible to you if your Voucher is used by someone other than yourself without permission. If you suspect someone has copied or stolen your Voucher, please contact Johnson Health Tech Trading's Customer Support Team immediately.

Vouchers are not for sale and cannot be purchased by you from Johnson Health Tech Trading, Inc. Johnson Health Tech Trading customers who cannot find a suitable product on BowFlex.com with their refund voucher can request that their voucher be converted to a cash refund, which will be issued in the form of a VISA gift card. You may not use the Voucher for unauthorized advertising, marketing, sweepstakes or other promotional purposes.

Subject to applicable law, we reserve the right, without notice to you, to void your Voucher and/or require you to use an alternative form of payment, if we suspect that you have obtained, used, transferred or otherwise applied to a Voucher to a purchase fraudulently, unlawfully, or otherwise in violation of these Voucher Terms, including without limitation by purchasing a Voucher from the original recipient.

JRNY Terms and Conditions

JRNY membership must be activated within 1 year of receiving the remedy.

JRNY membership is only available if your claim is submitted by June 4th, 2028.

If you are a new JRNY member, you will receive a link to redeem your free one-year JRNY membership after your claim is approved.

If you are an existing member who has a JRNY.com account, a link to redeem your free one-year membership will be sent to you after your claim is approved.

  • For month-to-month members, your free one-year JRNY membership will start at the end of the current month or trial period.
  • For annual members, your free one-year JRNY membership will start at the end of your current annual membership or trial period.

If you are an existing JRNY member who has purchased through an app store, you will need to cancel your membership in the app store and redeem your free one-year membership at the link provided to you after your claim is approved.

JRNY memberships are not transferable, nor redeemable for cash unless required by law.

This service is intended for use by users who are eighteen (18) years of age or older.
