Far too many people let their workout routines fall by the wayside during the holiday season. Parties, shopping, travel, family gatherings and more all contribute to the hectic schedules that can keep us from getting our workouts in. Add to all this the increased eating and drinking that accompanies the holidays, and now our waistlines are in real trouble.

Many people still believe – when it comes to exercise – that workouts must be 60 minutes to be effective. This couldn't be further from the truth.

Effective exercise comes down to quality over quantity. The duration of the workout is not half as important as the relative structure of the workout itself. We have all seen the people who toil away endlessly at the gym on machines like the elliptical and the stationary bike, yet their bodies never seem to change. Well, an intelligently designed 20-minute circuit-style workout can be infinitely more effective than a low-intensity 60-minute cardio session.

This is great news when it comes to the holiday season and getting in our workouts. Since time is a valuable commodity and we don't often have a full hour to devote to exercise, short, effective workouts are what this season is all about. Go hard and go home. Or better yet, do it at home. Here is a 20-minute full body circuit-style workout, no equipment necessary, that you can do anywhere at any time to keep fit during this holiday season:

The 20 Minute Full Body Holiday Circuit

  • 30 seconds running in place
  • 30 seconds pushups
  • 30 seconds jumping jacks
  • 30 seconds plank
  • 30 seconds squats
  • 30 seconds bicycle crunches
  • 30 seconds alternating forward lunges
  • 30 seconds mountain climbers
  • 30 seconds double crunches
  • 30 seconds burpees

Repeat three times, with no rest for a total workout time of 20 minutes. Want to make it harder? Increase the interval time to 45 or 60 seconds per exercise and do 2-3 sets instead.

When workout time is limited, just do this 20-minute circuit composed of basic yet tried-and-true exercises several times per week. It will help keep you from gaining those dreaded holiday pounds while helping reduce stress levels as well!
