Mind over Mirrors: Change starts within

So you have started on your New Year's Resolution. You determined your why and are committed to it. (Don't know what the 'why' is? Read this article.) Congratulations on taking the first step to building a new you.

Are you excited? Well you should be! You'll be feeling like a new person in a matter of a couple short weeks, if you work frequently, consistently and intensely.

You might be asking yourself how that's possible. First of all, I want you to re-read that statement again: you are going to feel like a brand new person. Notice I said feel like a new person. Not look like a new person. Your physical transformation will take longer than just a couple weeks. This is good news that you will start feeling changes happening immediately– long before you can even see them.

Allow me to explain. Health benefits from exercise begin after just a single bout of exercise. For about two days after your very first workout, your muscles will be consuming more glucose, an important sugar (carbohydrate) stored in the blood, muscles and liver that your body uses for energy.  That means you will be burning extra calories right away!

Not only that, but after just a few strength training sessions, your muscles will learn to contract harder making them noticeably stronger long before they get bigger. Also, the aerobic exercise you do will increase the number of mitochondria in your muscles immediately. I know, I know…what in the world are mitochondria? Just know this: they are extremely important for increasing your metabolism. Mitochondria are your body's natural power plants. They turn the calories you consume into energy, which means you will be burning calories as energy instead of storing them as fat.

Isn't it great to know what happens when you first start exercising? The important thing to remember here is that all this has to happen before your body can burn off the extra pounds.

Remember, even though you may not see results right away, you should feel them rather quickly. So don't give up if you aren't seeing results, because results ARE happening!
