Lateralx Testimonial: “I’M 56 And The Bowflex Lateralx Changed My Life”

In our Bowflex® LateralX® series, we chat with real people who participated in our 10-week fitness challenge. Jeff is a proud husband, and a father to a five-year-old daughter. His greatest accomplishment? Before the LateralX® challenge, he could only carry his daughter for half a block. At the end of the 10-week challenge, he could carry her for a mile and a half.

“That makes a big difference to me, because it’s again, one of my great joys. There’s such an intimacy to carrying your child. And I was starting to give up on my ability to do it for much longer, and I’ve got it now.”

Bowflex: You look amazing.

Jeff: Yeah, I feel great. I feel great.

Bowflex: Tell me more about how you feel?

Jeff: I’m 56 years old and I’m in the best shape of my life now. I’ve never worked this hard over that period of time. I’ve been doing something since the second week of the course that hasn’t happened in 35 years for me, which is probably one of the biggest things. I’m sleeping through the night. Which is huge. So I feel awesome.

Bowflex: You said you hadn’t done that in quite some time, so tell me more about that and what it means for your day-to-day?

Jeff: Well, I was probably 11th grade when I started. I’d get up at two in the morning and my dad would do the same thing. We often-times would meet in the food closet and wouldn’t say a word. We’d just eat for half an hour and go back to bed. That was ‘78 probably. Ever since then, I’ve just had that habit. It was my favorite meal of the day, getting up at two, three in the morning. But it packs on the pounds.

And for whatever reason I just couldn’t sleep through the night. I had given up. When I started the (LateralX) course, it wasn’t among the things that I was thinking would improve. All of a sudden, from weeks two to four, my wife said, “You know you haven’t gotten up once in two weeks.” And it continued through the rest of the (LateralX) course. Not only do I get better sleep, but I’m not having that 2,000 calories of pie and cake and ice cream, literally every night.

Bowflex: That’s awesome, talk to me about where you feel stronger?

Jeff: I’m feeling stronger all over, but the practical ways that I feel it have been awesome. The biggest joy that I get these days is lifting my five year-old. She’s 40 pounds now. Before I started this (LateralX) class, I could probably walk her half a block and that was it, and she’d give me a look like, “What kind of an uppie is that?” We call them uppies. And now at the end of the 10 weeks, I could walk her a mile and a half.

That makes a big difference to me, because it’s again, one of my great joys. There’s such an intimacy to carrying your child. I was starting to give up on my ability to do it for much longer, and I’ve got it now.

Bowflex: How would you describe to someone how the Bowflex LateralX moves?

Jeff: One of the things that I haven’t liked about ellipticals, or obviously treadmills, is its linear [path]. It just moves in one way. Which to me, was not comfortable and I would tire pretty quickly. The first 20 seconds on the LateralX I thought, “Hey somebody’s figured it out. This moves the way I move.” So it really became like dance to me.

Because you not only were moving forward, but you could move from side to side and you could, over time, experiment with shifting your weight a little bit differently. So I immediately realized I had found something that I not only enjoy, but I could stay on a for a long time without my knees getting creaky, or my hips hurting. It’s been amazing.

Bowflex: What other things in your daily life do you feel the LateralX has given you strength for?

Jeff: Just about everything. It had gotten to a point before the LateralX where I started to get scared to [do] basic things like lean over and pick something up. My quads weren’t strong enough to do a good squat. So practical things like, literally just leaning over to get something in a low cupboard or drawer. Now, I almost laugh when I think of how limited I was. Because a lot of what I do now if I’m moving around the house is turning things into a workout. How low can I go on a squat when I’m picking up that tray? It’s really helped day-to-day.

Bowflex: What does it mean to you to be in the best shape of your life at 56?

Jeff: Coming into this program at 56, I felt old. I felt tired. I felt fear if I needed to do something physical that I thought would be taxing, or could cause me to get hurt. All of a sudden, you’re just more limited in what you did in your daily life. And getting my body back now, you forget how much fun it is to physically engage in the world in tiny ways. Walking up a flight of stairs. Jogging to an Uber. I don’t feel limited in any way now, which is wonderful.

Bowflex: Do you know your numbers?

Jeff: Yeah, yeah.

Bowflex: Can I share them with you? You lost 11 pounds; how does it make you feel?

Jeff: It’s amazing to see that number. I never thought I would get back under 150 (pounds). I thought those were my college numbers and it’s just not going to happen. To get to that number means that I’ve worked, so there’s a pride in that. And it means that my body is functioning the way it should.

Bowflex: Do you feel stronger in your arms?

Jeff: I do.

Bowflex: Flex for us and tell us how you feel?

Jeff: I’ve never been a bicep guy but you could actually see it these days.

Bowflex: What does it feel like to have biceps you can see at this age?

Jeff: It feels like (being) 25 years old.
