Jeffrey “Jeff” Wilson of Newton, Mass. always loved running. From running cross country in high school to cheering on his marathoner dad whenever he had the chance, he found a way to incorporate his passion into every aspect of his life. However, at the age of 18, that all changed.
Surgery on an old knee injury and subsequent infection left him hospitalized for six weeks and unable to move without pain. As a lover of exercise, he turned to low-impact exercise like swimming and exercising on an elliptical to stay in shape, but missed his favorite hobby.
“There was really nothing I could do outside of the water that didn’t cause pain,” Jeff explains. “Literally every step I took was painful from age 18 to 52.”
At 52, Jeff’s knee had deteriorated to the point that he needed knee replacement surgery. Jeff recalls thinking after the surgery, “there was no way I was ever going to run again.”
While shopping around his local fitness store, Jeff was introduced to the Octane Fitness® Zero Runner® machine. Today, with the help of the Zero Runner, the 61-year-old medical director is able to run nearly six miles several times a week. He is in the best shape of his life and never felt better.
“I may be inside,” Jeff explains. “I’m not moving forward. But I’m running. I get a great workout, soaked with sweat, and I finish with a smile on my face because I’m running and I have no pain.”
Reintroducing running into his fitness routine also restored his love for exercise. “It’s just fun,” Jeff says. “Other people look at exercise as a chore, but I look forward to doing it. When I’m done, I’m literally smiling. It’s just one more joy and everyone could use more joy in their life.”
