The holidays are tough. There’s a lot to do, people to see and food to eat.

With all the travel, holiday parties, work parties, ugly sweater parties, shopping parties and any other type of party you can think of, it can be tough to stick to a consistent exercise routine. Couple this inactivity with all the food that must be eaten and it can wreak havoc on your waistline. If you’re wondering about whether or not the food must be eaten, the answer is yes, it MUST be eaten! You don’t want to get on Granny’s bad side by passing up the turkey she slaved on all day. You do that and no hugs for you! Besides, Granny’s turkey is delicious. Why would you not want to eat it?

The trick is to keep your portions in check.

Exercise will help reduce the impact of excessive holiday cheer, but as I mentioned, staying consistent during this time of year is darn near impossible. Still, that’s no excuse to give it up all together! It may seem impossible, but you can still get enough exercise during the holidays to keep your fitness from going to the gravy.

Here are my top 3 tips to keep you exercising through the holidays:

  1. Reduce your frequency

    Most people don’t have to work out 5 days a week to maintain their fitness. As little as 2-3 days a week will be enough to maintain what you’ve worked so hard to get. Once the holidays are over, then you can go back to beast mode.

  2. Get a home gym

    If you can’t get to the gym, bring the gym to you! This can be as simple as having some dumbbells and a bench or having a complete home gym such as a Bowflex®.

  3. Go for a walk!

    Walking can be an excellent way to keep your body moving, healthy and even burn a fair amount of calories if you make it brisk or climb a bunch of hills. Don’t forget, this is always in your back pocket!
