The Halloween Workout You Already Have Planned

How to turn your kid's favorite activity into a workout for you

When it comes to Halloween, trick-or-treating might be one of the most iconic festivities of the night. Dressing up the kiddos and going door-to-door for candy can seem like just another seasonal tradition. But have you ever thought about it as a workout opportunity? Walking can burn up to 200 calories per hour, depending on your speed and intensity. Consider this year’s trick-or-treating one very festive Halloween workout opportunity! But before you head out for the evening, be sure to pack these four important items:

  1. Comfortable shoes. Depending on the neighborhood or intended route, you could be walking more than intended. Opt for comfortable walking shoes, just like you would for any routine walking session. Trick-or-treating can be a fun activity, but don’t forget that it’s also a physical one!
  2. A bottle of water. Just like any other workout, it’s important to keep yourself hydrated while you’re out and about. Sip on water throughout the night – and make sure the kids are too.
  3. A granola bar (or other healthy snack). Halloween candy is a tempting way to break your healthy eating habits – especially when it’s within reach. Pack a protein bar, or other healthy snack option, to keep yourself from reaching for sweets while you’re waiting curbside.
  4. A flashlight. Depending on the time of evening, you might be walking in the dark. Maintaining visibility, just like on a night run or bike ride, is an important safety precaution. A flashlight, clip-on biker light or even reflective clothing are all great options to consider.
