3 Simple Tips for a Healthy Road Trip
By guest author Brooke Birmingham
There’s nothing like getting in the car and hitting the open road for that last summer trip. But this doesn’t mean that you have to live in the car and run through the drive thru lane. With these simple tips, your road trip can be healthy as well as fun!
- Pack Snacks
Foods like bananas, nuts, apples and granola bars are great because they don’t require refrigeration. If you have access to a cooler, pack things like applesauce, cheese sticks and hard-boiled eggs. Having the healthier snacks on hand is a great way to stay on track and save money. Also, don’t forget to pack water!
- Move When You Stop
When you make a pit stop, be sure to stretch a bit. It is important to make sure you are getting the blood flowing after sitting in a car for long periods of time. Most rest areas have paths where you can get in a quick walk, or if you’re stopping for lunch somewhere, take a walk around the area. You may just happen upon something you wouldn’t have seen driving in your car.
- Research Food Stops
Before you head out on your trip, do some research about your stopping places. Scope out restaurants, and check out the food selection. If you are unsure of where you may be stopping, use Yelp on your phone. It is a great way to find out what is close by and what’s on the menu. Look for the healthier options or decide that you may want to splurge on the local fare you can’t get back home.
